My English Class

The first time I learned English was in junior high school. My English teacher was a young lady. She was pretty but austere in teaching.Students had a lot of homework and quizzes next class.

In the first class, the ABC’s looked like strange words I had never seen. However, I was interested in it. For me, memorized ABC’s was pretty easy because it only had twenty-six letters. After that, the teacher taught us pronunciation, a few vocabulary words and grammar. Several weeks left, there were a lot of vocabulary words I had to memorize. I studied hard; nevertheless, I could not memorize all of the words. The class could not stop for me and had to keep going.

In our culture, teachers would punish students if their grades were bad. At that time, I had many weals because my grade is good in the beginning but it was getting worse in the middle of class. Finally, I got a “C.”

In my country, besides big cities, the students only had two or four hours for English class each week when I was a teenager and they did not learn the composition, speaking and reading.

In short, I believe that most students will forget English after school. Even though I study English for ten years, my English skills are still poor.

It depends how you study English. A linguist called Steve Krashen believes that you naturally pick up the language as you immerse yourself in it. Hopefully, living here and going to school here will help your language abilities a lot.
