My Problems in Composition

In the end of my semester, I believe that I learned a lot but my writing still is poor. The most serious problem is in using vocabulary. This is an old problem. Although I study and memorize a lot vocabulary, I do not use it. I always forget the words that I learned when I was writing and speaking. There are many people said, “If your ideas are coherent, you still can get a good grade.” However, I do not believe it. If I write an essay by using simple words, it looks like a child’s essay. You know. Until now, even though I do not remember the ten point words, I still try to use four or five point words in my writing. The other problem is associations. For you, it maybe easy to get ideas but for me, it is difficult. I always spent a lot of times in thinking about title, introduction, topic sentence, supporting sentences and conclusion. In order to improve my writing skill, I have to read books, novels and newspapers. It may make me get ideas quickly. If I get ideas easily, I believe that I will write faster than before in time writing.

The History of Taiwan and China

In 1910s, there was a man, whose name was Sun Yat-sen, established a new party and new government. The party’s name was the Kumintang of China (KMT), and the government’s name was the Republic of China (ROC). In fact, the government only controlled several provinces. There were many different groups controlled the other provinces.

In 1920s, in order to control China, Mr. Sun decided to fight other groups. During the war, Mr. Sun died. And then, Chiang Kai-shek became new leader of ROC.

In 1930s, after civil wars, ROC became the biggest group and controlled China.

In the early 1940s, during the World War II, for fighting against Japan, Mr. Chiang asked Mr. Mao, who was the leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), to help ROC. After World War II, CPC had a civil war with ROC because Mr. Mao wanted to get the control of China.

In 1945, ROC was a member of United Nations (UN) and nominated the permanent member to UN.

In 1949, CPC won the war, and Mr. Mao established the People’s Republic of China (PRC). ROC and KMT retreated to Taiwan.

In 1971, due to the fact that PRC got the control of China, UN made a decision that PRC should be instead of ROC. Although, the United States tried to help ROC and submitted a new proposal to UN, it did not work. Finally, PRC in and ROC out.

Disneyland

I have been to Disneyland many times. My profound memory is the first time I been to Disneyland. I went there with Elaine, my sister, nephew and niece. I was so excited because this is my “first time.” Before, I just watched the TV commercials and advertisements, and then imagined it. At that time, I looked like a child because Disneyland is my dream place since I was five or six years old.

We only went to Disneyland Park because we did not have enough time. I saw the castle but I felt frustrated. The castle did not as huge as it was in commercial. It was pretty small. Anyway, I still wanted to take picture with the castle. After that, we went through the castle and went to next place. Suddenly, I saw the Spiderman on the top of mountain where near the castle. It was amazing. I told my nephew and niece quickly. We looked at the Spiderman. However, he did not do anything. Later, he opened a door and walked into the door. The Spiderman was gone. My nephew and niece felt sad. I told them “The Spiderman has to take a break. He will come back soon. Now, we go to another place first and come back here later. Ok?” They trusted me and went with me. Finally, we did not see the Spiderman anymore. My nephew and niece also forgot him.

Next, we went to Mickey’s house and Minnie’s house. In order to see Mickey and Minnie, we spent two hours on the line. For having their autographs, we bought the book and pen. However, seeing one time was not enough for my nephew and niece. They visited Mickey’s house and Minnie’s house many times. There was one thing I interested in. I could not understand Mickey’s autograph. It just was a picture, not an autograph. Whatever, I did not mind because they were happy. We did not go to the other places. We stayed there and took care of them. I also took picture with Mickey.

Finally, we went home after fireworks. Both my nephew and niece had a good time and me, either.

DISNEY HALL

Have you ever seen an amazing building? There are many amazing buildings in the world, like Taipei 101, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Sydney Opera House. If you are going to go to Los Angeles, you have to visit Disney Hall. This building is the main music center in Los Angeles. I have a lot of information about Disney Hall. I am going to talk about the architecture, music, tickets, and location.

Disney Hall has a beautiful appearance which was conceived by Frank Gehry. His concept was a ship; he designed Disney Hall as a sailing ship. The building was made of metal. The metal looked like a mirror and it was very shining. If you look at Disney Hall from all view points, you will be surprised and amazed at this building because it looks like a space shuttle. It is so modern and fashionable that you will not forget it. Frank Gehry also designed an organ which looks like French fries; you can find it inside the building. Disney Hall is unusual and you can not find another building like this in the world.

Disney Hall has many kinds of music, like the classical concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Jazz, the Baroque program, world music, and chamber music, etc. There is a great music program in March 2, 2008. It is Jazz music. The program’s name is, “A Tribute to Ella.” You also can find the information about other music programs, artists, and composers on the Disney Hall homepage. All of the programs are very popular in the U.S.A. You really should enjoy these music programs.

How do you buy the tickets? There is an easy way. You can buy them online. First, you use the internet to search the Disney Hall homepage. Then you will find a link about tickets. Click it and you can find all the information inside. You also can buy the tickets by phone, fax, and e-mail. The tickets usually cost less than 150 dollars. The price depends on which program and which seat you choose. There is an important thing you should know. You have to go to Disney Hall at least 30 minutes before the program’s start. You can easily find parking spaces and your seat.

The address of Disney Hall is 111 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. It’s in southwest corner between First Street and Grand Avenue. If you drive your car or ride a motorcycle, you just take the 110 or 101 freeways. It’s on the southeast corner between the 110 and 101 freeways. You can also choose Metro Rail or bus. If you take Metro Rail, you take the Red Line and stop at Hill Street. This station is on the southwest corner between First Street and Hill Street. You can find Disney Hall on the west side. If you take the bus, you have to find the bus number or get information on the bus company’s website: http://www.mta.net/.

In conclusion, Disney Hall is beautiful and has popular music programs. Every visitor enjoys that, and this is the reason why Disney Hall is a famous building around the world. After you read this all information, I hope that you decide to visit Disney Hall sometime soon.

The Earthquake in My Country

In 1999, there was a devastating earthquake in Taiwan, the day was September 21. I was a student in college. While the earthquake happened, the time was 1:47 am, I was sleeping in dormitory. I woke up immediately when I felt that. Then the alarm bell was ringing. I felt everything was shaking. Suddenly, the bookcase where on the corner was falling down. My roommates and I were so scared that we ran out of the room. On the corridor, I saw everyone was running. However, the earthquake was so strong that we had to walk along the walls. Then we ran out of dormitory. We found an open space and stayed there. At the same time, the earthquake was still working.

We had a conversation about the earthquake. I said, “I have not seen a grisly earthquake in my life.” One of my roommate said, “Me, either. I think it must be a high magnitude earthquake.” Another roommate said, “Magnitude six or seven, probably.” Later, the police of school came to us and said, “Everyone fine? Just stay here, do not go anywhere. We will come back soon. Take care.” I saw the trees were shaking and the windows of building were crumbling. Even though everything came apart, there had good news. Our buildings were pretty strong. No one fell down. Only some buildings had few fractures. The earthquake was still working.

Thirty minutes left, I tried to call home; however, my cell phone and pay phone both did not work because the electric power system was broken. Although I worried about my family, I could not go anywhere at that time. We stayed there until 8:00 am. The main earthquake was stopped but there still had a few happened lightly. We sat on the ground and ate some bread that the police gave us. The tap water system also broken so we just had bottle waters.

Until noon, the earthquake almost finished. The president of school made a decision that everyone went home and stayed with family. So he asked the city government to help us. On the way, I saw many buildings toppled down. Freeways and bridges were broken. Fires and accidents happened everywhere. I remembered there were many tall buildings in the city but at that time, just ruins. The prospects looked like the end of the world. When I arrived home, everyone was fine. I was so happy and give them a hug.

Soon many countries and the International Red Cross helped us whatever we are not the member of the United Nations or we do not have diplomatic relations with these countries. After earthquake, the government did an investigation of the calamity. Thousands of people died and wounded. Finally, we spent several months rebuild our country and home. Until now, I believe that perhaps you can imagine the view I saw. In your mind, my story may is similar to the movies but it truly happened in my country.

The old fool moves a mountain

Long time ago, there was an old man lived in northern China. There were two mountains to the south of his house which blocked the way to the downtown. One was called Mount Taixing, and the other was called Mount Wangwu. Everyday, old man had to spend five hours crossing through the mountains. One day, the old man and his sons decided to move the two mountains with hoes. At the first day, when they were working, there was a young man laughed at them. He said, “Are you foolish? There is absolutely no way that you can move the two mountains.” The old man replied, “Although it is a mission impossible, I will not give up. After I die, there are my son, my grandson, and their sons and grandsons, etc. Even though these two mountains are tall, they won't get any taller. If we dig a little, there will be a little less. Why can't we keep digging until it is flat?” The old man refuted the young man's thought and did not waver in his confidence. The old man and his sons worked hard. They did not stop, even they were sick. A few days left, the God heard this news and impressed by the old man. The God decided to help them and asked two spirits down to earth to move the two mountains away. Next day, the old man found the mountains were gone. Nobody knew what happened and who moved the mountains. Only the God knew.

P.S
I have a question for the God. Why did not you just move their house?
